They ain't maidenheads, matey. Figureheads is more like it.

 Your blog-meister regrets a naming error in a recent post.

 
Remember the old Toyota pick-up with all manner of statuettes glued on to the hood?  I suggested that these icons of good luck and smooth seas might be referred to as maidenheads on sailing ships of yore.  

A sharp eye reader, perhaps embarrassed for old Poppy here, corrected my post.

"A maidenhead is a woman's virginity," my new BFF wrote. "A figurehead is what you really mean. A figurehead is affixed to the prow of a ship."
